Amazon Image Requirements: The Rules That Actually Get Listings Suppressed
Most sellers discover Amazon's image rules the same way — sales drop for a week, nothing in the dashboard looks broken, and then someone points out the main image is greyed out in search results.
Suppression is quiet. Amazon does not email you a red alert saying your background is four RGB points too dark. The listing simply stops appearing where buyers look, and the revenue gap shows up before the explanation does.
This guide covers what Amazon actually requires, which rules cause the most failures, and how to verify a photo before you upload it rather than after.
The requirements, in plain terms
These are the main-image rules from Amazon's product image standards. They apply to the primary image of every listing, in every category.

Secondary images have far looser rules — lifestyle context, infographics, scale references and text are all permitted there. Everything above is about the one image buyers see in search results.
Why "off-white" is the silent killer
This is the failure mode that costs sellers the most money, because it is invisible to the human eye.
Pure white in RGB terms is 255,255,255 — the maximum value on all three channels. A background at 254,254,254 is, to your eye, identical. To an automated check, it is not white.
Studio lighting falloff. Even in a lightbox, the corners of the frame receive slightly less light than the centre. Shoot on white paper and you often get 255 in the middle and 248–252 at the edges. The photo looks clean. It is not compliant.
Anti-aliased cutout edges. When a background-removal tool cuts your product out, it softens the boundary pixels so the edge does not look jagged. Those boundary pixels are semi-transparent. Composite them onto white and you get a one-to-three-pixel halo of 250–254 grey running around your entire product. This is the most common problem with generic background removers: they return a transparent PNG, and whatever you place it on inherits that grey fringe.
JPEG compression artifacts. JPEG is lossy. Save a perfectly white background at moderate compression and the algorithm introduces subtle blocking near high-contrast edges — exactly where your product meets the background. Values drift off 255. Saving the same file twice compounds it.
The practical consequence: you can do everything right in the studio, use a well-known editing tool, and still ship a non-compliant image. And because the difference is imperceptible, you will not catch it by looking. The only reliable check is measuring the actual pixel values.
The 85% rule, and why it is the most-failed requirement
Amazon requires the product to fill at least 85% of the image frame. This exists for a simple reason: search results display images small, and a product floating in a sea of white margin is unreadable at thumbnail size.
Sellers fail this constantly, usually by being cautious. You leave generous margins so nothing gets cropped, export the file, and end up at 60–70% fill. The image looks tidy and professional. It fails the rule.
The fix is mechanical: crop tight to the product's bounding box, then add uniform padding that keeps you above 85%. Doing this by hand across a catalogue is tedious and inconsistent — this is the kind of task worth automating, because the correct crop is a calculation, not an aesthetic judgement.
Note that 85% is measured against the product's bounding box, not its silhouette area. A pair of shoes photographed at an angle can look sparse while still passing, because the bounding box is what counts.
What suppression actually does to your listing
When Amazon flags a main image as non-compliant, the listing does not get deleted. It gets deprioritised. Depending on severity, one or more of these happens:
- The listing stops appearing in search results for its keywords
- The Buy Box becomes unavailable
- Sponsored Products ads pointing at the ASIN stop serving
- The detail page stays live by direct link, so your own traffic still works
That last point is why sellers misdiagnose it. Your listing looks fine when you check it, because you arrive by direct link. Meanwhile organic discovery has stopped and your ad spend is going nowhere.
The compounding cost is worse: while the listing is suppressed, it accumulates no sales velocity and no reviews. Amazon's ranking is heavily influenced by sales history. A two-week suppression does not cost you two weeks of revenue — it costs you two weeks of revenue plus the ranking position you spend the following month rebuilding.
If your listing was suppressed right now, fix the main image first and worry about the ranking recovery after — the flag typically clears within 24–48 hours of a compliant upload.
What the research does and does not say
The e-commerce photography space is full of confidently cited statistics that dissolve when you look for the source. Here is what holds up, stated accurately.
Image quality affects buyer trust, and trust affects whether the item sells. A Cornell Tech research team led by Xiao Ma, working with Prof. Mor Naaman, built a classifier for product-image quality and studied its relationship to marketplace outcomes. Buyers are more likely to trust sellers who use high-quality photos, and items with higher-quality images are more likely to sell. Their classifier reached 87% accuracy. (arXiv, paper 1811.10648.) Two honest caveats: the study examined shoes and handbags on eBay and LetGo — not Amazon — and it measured overall image quality, not background colour specifically.
Photo quality ranks above price for some marketplace buyers. Etsy's own seller research found that around 90% of shoppers rated photo quality as critical to their purchase decision, ahead of both price and reviews. This is a self-reported survey by a marketplace about its own buyers, so treat it as directional rather than causal.
Roughly a fifth of returns are a photography problem. Narvar's consumer returns research attributes about 22% of e-commerce returns to the item looking different than the buyer expected — a visual communication failure that costs you outbound shipping, return shipping, inspection and restocking on a sale you already counted.
What we deliberately are not citing. You will find claims that better photos lift conversion by 94%, that Shopify measured a 33% increase, or that the brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text. We traced each of these. They circulate as attributions to studies that either cannot be located or say something different. We left them out. Amazon's published requirements are a stronger argument than a borrowed statistic, because they are the actual condition for your listing being visible.
How to check a photo before Amazon does
Check the background value. Open the image in any editor with an eyedropper tool. Sample four corners and two points along each edge, close to the product but not touching it. Every sample must read 255,255,255. If any reads 254 or lower, the background is not compliant.
Check the edge halo. Zoom to 400% or more and trace the boundary where product meets background. Sample the pixels immediately outside the product outline. This is where cutout tools leave grey fringing, and it is the check most people skip.
Check the frame fill. Note the pixel coordinates of the product's leftmost, rightmost, topmost and bottommost points. That bounding box divided by total image area must exceed 0.85.
Check the dimensions. Longest side at 1000 px minimum. Use 1600 px if you want zoom to work, because zoom is what buyers use to inspect detail before committing.
Re-check after every save. Because JPEG compression is lossy, the file you verified is not necessarily the file you uploaded. Verify the final export, not the working copy.
Doing this across fifty photos by hand takes most of an afternoon and is easy to get wrong when you are tired. Amazon and Walmart are the strict ones. eBay tolerates off-white, which is precisely why sellers get caught: a photo that has worked on eBay for years fails the moment you cross-list it to Amazon.
Frequently asked questions
Does Amazon really check the exact RGB value?
The main-image standard specifies pure white, and automated compliance checks operate on pixel values rather than visual similarity. Treating 255,255,255 as the requirement rather than an ideal is the safe assumption.
Will a transparent PNG work instead?
Not reliably for the main image. When Amazon renders a transparent PNG, the background it composites onto is not guaranteed to be pure white, and your anti-aliased edges will pick up whatever it uses. Supply a flattened image with an explicit white background.
Can I add a shadow under the product?
Yes, and a subtle contact shadow usually helps — it makes the product read as a photographed object rather than a pasted cutout. Keep it soft and keep the surrounding background at pure white. A heavy shadow that darkens the corners of the frame will fail the background check.
My listing was suppressed. How fast does it recover?
Once you upload a compliant image, the flag typically clears within 24 to 48 hours as Amazon reprocesses it. Search ranking takes longer, because the sales velocity you lost during suppression continues affecting your position after visibility returns.
Does the 85% rule apply to secondary images?
No. Secondary images allow lifestyle context, infographics, scale references and text. All the strict rules govern the main image only.
Is 1000 px or 1600 px the real minimum?
1000 px is the requirement. 1600 px is the threshold at which zoom becomes available, and zoom is how buyers examine texture and finish before purchasing. Treat 1600 as your working minimum.
